True or False? How to discern if a prophet is for real

Today we have more Christian conferences, sermons and books available than ever before in our history. And as we’ve discussed on Stand Up For The Truth, there seems to be an explosion of false teachings and prophets. Some are blatantly obvious, and some are so subtle that they are very difficult to spot, even for long-time ministry leaders.

The Bible says in Matthew 24:24 “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.” Jesus Himself makes it so clear in His warnings of this. (Here are a few more verses all throughout the Old and New Testament that warn about false prophets.)  That’s why we need to weigh everything that is said. But how do we discern God’s Truth from statements, prophecies and teachings that come from imperfect humans? How are we to make sure we are not deceived by false prophets?

Today our special guest, Johanna Michaelsen, joins us with some words to clear up confusion about how to test these things to see if they are true. Johanna Michaelsen is a noted author, researcher and speaker.  You may have seen her on television or in Caryl Matrisciana’s DVD series on the Emergent Church titled “Wide is the Gate.”  Her internationally best selling autobiography, The Beautiful Side of Evil, tells the story of her involvement with the occult, yoga, and Silva Mind Control. She left the occult 30 years ago and has dedicated her service to Jesus Christ warning others about the dangerously deceptive practices that are sweeping our nation–and our churches.

  1. Isn't the easy way to tell a prophet is real is that ALL his prophesies, 100% of the time are realized? And True?

  2. You are right, but that is one of four main ways. And according to our guest tomorrow, all four criteria must be tested and true, or the prophet is false.

Robert, please read Deuteronomy 13. There is a time coming where the false prophets will be 100% accurate with their prophecies and will truely do wonders however they will not hold up Our Blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ God of very God and also fully man who by the sacrifice of himself on the cross made peace between us and God by his blood. Nor will they hold to the obedience of the faith. They will follow thier own ways, which is the way of the world and the way of the flesh, always at emnity with the word of God which is mighty to save.

Jesus promises my sheep will hear my voice and will not follow after strangers, to come to steal, kill and destroy.

  4. Dear Amy,
This is pastor Marco from Southern California.
I totally agree with Johanna, and praise the Lord for her and her contending for the faith.
There is a horrible doctrine that says Jesus died and went to hell to suffer at the hands of satan and be born again in hell. I know these false teachers deny that Jesus got the victory on the cross.
I know that Joyce Meyer, Kenneth Copeland, Benny Hinn propagated this doctrine. Can Johanna deal with this horrific teaching that has permeated the church? and who else propagates it?
This is a total a denial of the atoning work of Jesus on the cross.

  6. Excellent show! And much needed in these last days, as well.

I appreciated the late Dr. Walter Martin's approach to the issue when he said, "When people say, ‘I believe in Jesus’, look them straight in the eye and ask, ‘Which one?’"

By God's grace and for His glory, we must strive to equip ourselves to identify and root out the enemies of His perfect Gospel…especially when they are operating from within the professing church.

Jesus when He walked with us really emphasized the need to judge the fruit. But we are to do this with all who are in leadership roles in the body, not just: televangelist, mega church pastors, or book authors.

I forget which guy said this first, but the followers any leader propogates are fruit as well. Judge them too. In fact it will be more evident or pronounced in the followers than in the leaders. The leaders know all to well how to hide the truth and to mask thier heart.

    Who is thier Christ?
What is the fruit of thier mouth?
What is thier time spent on, what do they pursue?
What is thier standard for truth?
What do they build unity around?

There should be another show on this to describe what these are supposed to look like for a believer.

Philippians 3:17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. 18 (For many walk , of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping , that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) 20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

    God bless,

    Dan
