Catalyst and Rainn Wilson: Why?

When Catalyst, the largest Emergent Church leaderhip builder, invites a well-known actor who is a Baha’i cult believer as someone for young leaders to emulate and follow, we have to ask, Why?

Young millennials who love Wilson’s Dwight Schrute character on The Office can now find Wilson as a regular contributor and part of Oprah Winfrey’s OWN, a network of spirituality that is anything BUT biblical Christianity.

It wasn’t just a one-time appearance. This week I received a notice in the Catalyst Newsletter that Rainn Wilson did a brand new interview with Catalyst. So this organization really likes Wilson, and they want you to like him too:

It might be easy for many Christians to dismiss Oprah as another New Ager who promotes a very different Jesus. Even easier yet to discern that the Baha’i faith is nothing like Christianity. But Catalyst is still seen in many mainline churches as a legitimate Christian organization that trains leaders through its youth-oriented mega conferences all around the nation each year.

RightNow Media is the latest tool that has been commandeered by Catalyst, Leadership Network, Willow Creek and Saddleback to put forward videos, teachers, Bible resources and more (think CircleMaker, the tool’s most-watched video), into the hands of those who use digital media and thousands of churches are using it to disciple their members. And while some resources and videos might be good, the poison lurking in the media library is there as well. Who will help Christians navigate the minefield?

Question: Shouldn’t we be equipping our next generation with the absolute truth from the Holy Spirit-breathed out Word of God? If Catalyst isn’t doing that, why would we give them a moment of credence as if they should influence the Bride of Christ?

One Response to “Catalyst and Rainn Wilson: Why?”

  1. You guys are pot stirring. First off, Catalyst is not the least bit "emergent" Really? Andy Stanley and John Piper? Emergent? Second of all, Rainn isn't even speaking at Catalyst. And, when he was there, it was an interview. They aren't just going to turn him loose at that venue.
