On surface, it wasn’t a very uplifting show this morning. We asked a serious question: “HAS THE WORLD REACHED A POINT OF NO RETURN?” This is a question as humans we just don’t want to think about.
The thoughts of an economic meltdown, widespread civil unrest and war in the Middle East are very disturbing. And maybe, just maybe, cool heads on all sides will prevail and we will see our way through these crucial times. Maybe our republic will emerge stronger than ever. Maybe there will be a moral and spiritual revival in our nation and around the world. Maybe Christians will really get serious about pursuing the holiness that Jesus told us to pursue.
There is an old saying: “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst”. I think that saying is worth heeding in these times. But the most important things we can do are to pray and really immerse ourselves in God’s Word. One of the many beauties of God’s Word is that we know how the story ends. Those of us who believe in Jesus Christ and trust Him as the Son of God who died for our sins, will live for eternity with Him in heaven.
The world’s governments and partner organizations are headed right back to Babylon, the biblical city that exemplifies evil and false worship. In Revelation 18:4 Jesus says: “Come out of her my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes.” More than ever, it is crucial that we as Christians do not conform to the ways and teachings of this world. If we do, we will face the consequences.
No matter how things unfold in the coming year, never lose hope. And if you have become a luke warm believer, return to your first love. Think of the joy you experienced when you turned your life over to God and truly believed in Jesus as your Lord and Savior. If the world is beating you down, find rest, peace and true joy in Him—no matter what happens.
I truly hope I am wrong, but I see very disturbing times ahead for us in the coming months and years. May we have the strength of the Holy Spirit to stay true to Him and not be seduced by evil. I also see a great opportunity for true Christians to stand up, show the joy of Jesus Christ and be true light and salt to the people we know. In times of crisis, human beings look for something greater than themselves. May our words and actions point them to Jesus Christ and His gospel of salvation.
