Today we looked at some startling statistics showing a very disturbing trend within Christian churches in America. As a whole Christians in America have become ignorant about core teachings in the Bible. The Words of God in Hosea Chapter 4 are taking on tremendous meaning these days:
“My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the laws of your God, I also will ignore your children.”
Christianity in America is in crisis. We are rejecting the knowledge and wisdom of God, choosing to replace it with our own version of the story. We are replacing the wisdom of God’s Word with our personal experiences and feelings. We are headed down a path that leads to self-worship and destruction.
Have we become so concerned with being “seeker friendly” that we have chosen to abandon God’s message of repentance? Are we afraid that preaching about a holy God who asks us to become holy is too difficult for people in our churches to handle? Has the need for knowing God been replaced with a desire to feel good about ourselves? Have we become more concerned with the number of people in our churches instead of the depth of spiritual maturity of those in the church?
What does it say about us as a church when only 32% of self-professed bible believing Christians acknowledge the existence of absolute truth? It says that, just like the world, we think we can define truth any way we want. That we can pick and choose what we believe. That we think we can mold God into our image of what we think he should be.
America faces some serious challenges: the potential of economic crisis because of our mounting debt; the threat of radical Muslim terrorists who want to destroy our nation and way of life; a decaying moral culture that allows the deaths of 1.5 million unborn children every year.
Interesting isn’t it, that these challenges coincide with our abandoning biblical knowledge and the acknowledgment of God’s absolute truth. “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.” God warned us—and still we abandon His truth for our own foolishness. What a stiff-necked people we have become.
