In Matthew 24, Jesus gives us a chilling look at the final days before His return.  In verse 10 He states:  “At that time many will fall away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.”  There can be no doubt of the persecution against Christians in nations like China and Muslim nations of the Middle East.  Christians in these nations lay their lives on the line for their belief in Jesus Christ.  But what is going on here in the United States?

While we are seeing increased discrimination against Christians, we are still free to worship and proclaim our faith openly.  However, that is not to say all is well with our faith in this country.  We see false teachings creep into our churches as we become increasingly illiterate about the Bible and God’s teachings.  Well known Pastors and Christian leaders are embracing teachings that are increasingly contradictory to the Bible, all in the name of just getting along.

As I read the Old and New Testament, I see teachings warning us against compromise with other faiths.  Jesus did command that we love all men—even our enemies—but never at the cost of compromising our faith.  But today our human desire to get along with all men is leading us to a point where Christian leaders like Pastor Rick Warren and others are being seduced by the false religion of Islam.  As I read their response to “A Common Word between Us”  I just scratch my head and wonder “What could they be thinking?”  Is their attempt to find common ground between Christianity and Islam an act of ignorance?  Or is there something more sinister at work here?  We’ll continue that discussion in the coming days and weeks.

In the meantime we need to make a personal commitment to get back into the Word of God and really know what He is teaching us.   Statistics show a minority of Evangelical Christians believe the Bible is the absolute truth of God.  Unless we make a strong commitment as believers to get back into God’s Word and once again take Him at His Word, I fear we will see a great falling away in the coming years.  You say it could never happen in this country?  Really?  Well we probably also thought we would never see the day when leading Pastors like Rick Warren would be on a path to embrace Islam as an equal partner with Christianity.

Brothers and Sisters, the very foundation of our Christian faith is coming under attack.  Are we prepared to defend our faith?  Will we even recognize deception and false teaching when it is presented?  Or will we choose to pretend everything is just fine.  When push comes to shove, will we stand firm and take God at His Word?  Of course to do that, we first need to know what God’s Word says.  And sadly that seems to be a diminishing priority with Christians.
