There has been a lot of discussion about beliefs espoused by Michael Gungor, a musician who will be playing at Power of One, an event hosted and owned by Life Promotions. This event attracts thousands of Christian youth every year with rock music and speakers. Our Board has carefully discussed and prayed about how we should respond to this event.

Michael Gungor has made some very controversial remarks over the last couple years. He has stated he does not and cannot believe in a literal Adam and Eve as the first people, and has said the Flood is not believable and has been disproven by science. He has admitted he is under the influence of Rob Bell—who has branded himself an apostate by his views on eternity and marriage—and Rachel Held Evans, who supports homosexuality for Christians along with several other dangerous teachings. In fact both of them helped Gungor create his latest album.

First let us say the issue must be clarified. It is not Michael Gungor’s refuting a literal six-day creation that we find most disturbing. We believe Christians can hold a respectful debate on this issue, although we unanimously believe in a literal six-day creation.

The issue that causes us the deepest concern is Mr. Gungor’s statement that he cannot believe in a literal Adam and Eve as the earth’s first two people, nor does he believe that the Flood in Genesis really happened. There is a huge difference in Christians debating interpretation of scriptures vs. refuting the Bible as the eternal, inerrant truth of God.

If one believes that Adam and Eve were not real people and that the Flood is merely a metaphor rather than a fact, it calls into question several crucial teachings and verses in the Bible—and even calls into question the words and teachings of Jesus Christ Himself—God. If Jesus could be in error, what does that say about the God we claim to worship? Here are some of the many verses Mr. Gungor’s beliefs call into question:

Genesis 5:1-5

“This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created. When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.”

Hosea 6:7

“But like Adam they transgressed the covenant; there they dealt faithlessly with me.”

Romans 5:14

“Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.”

1 Corinthians 15:22

“For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”

1 Corinthians 15:45-49

“Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.”

1 Timothy 2:13-14

“For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.”

Luke 3:23-38

“The Genealogy of Jesus Christ Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda, the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er, the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim, the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Sala, the son of Nahshon, the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.”

In fact Adam is mentioned 21 times throughout the Bible. Refuting he is a real person creates several questions:

  • Is Jesus’ lineage also “made up”?
  • How then did sin enter the world?
  • If the “first Adam” is fictitious why is Jesus referred to as the “final Adam”?

Isaiah 54:9

This is like the days of Noah to me: as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you, and will not rebuke you.”

Ezekiel 14:14

“..even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver but their own lives by their righteousness, declares the Lord God.”

Ezekiel 14:19-20

“Or if I send a pestilence into that land and pour out my wrath upon it with blood, to cut off from it man and beast, even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, declares the Lord God, they would deliver neither son nor daughter. They would deliver but their own lives by their righteousness.”

Matthew 24:37-39

“For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.”

Luke 3:36-38 (genealogy of Jesus Christ)

“..the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.”

Hebrews 11:7

“By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.”

1 Peter 3:20-22

“…because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.”

2 Peter 2:4-10

“For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority. Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones,”

When Adam and Eve, and Noah and the Flood are dismissed as “fictional stories”, many of the teachings of the Bible are brought into question. It is clear in Matthew 24 that Jesus is confirming Noah and the Flood as historical events, not mere “stories”.

The first temptation recorded in the Bible is Satan asking Eve “Did God really say…?” The beliefs expressed by Mr. Gungor are, in our opinion, an extension of this temptation. When we begin to doubt the eternal truth of God in His Word, we begin a slide into apostasy (falling away).

Again, we believe there is room for discussion on certain interpretations of the scriptures in areas like Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the timing of the rapture of the church, the drinking of wine, etc. But it is a totally different thing to question the truth of the scriptures. Once the dam is opened, the flood waters come rushing in.

We live in a time where young people not only listen to the music of artists they follow, but check them out on their website and Facebook blogs. Music is a powerful tool appealing to the emotions of people. We are concerned that approving of Mr. Gungor’s music and appearance will lead to young people—whose heads are already being filled with doubts about God and His Word—to further doubt and question. Mr. Gungor himself expresses he has doubts about God.

James 1:5-8

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

We cannot be a party to introducing more doubt into the hearts and minds of young Christians already being fed doubt and lies by the world. They receive enough of that in public schools, from the government and through television, music and movies. To now hear it from a professing believer in a position of influence is not acceptable.

When we had to take a tough stance on the appearance of Jim Wallis at Lifest four years ago, it was a difficult but necessary decision. We, along with the General Managers of our other local Christian Radio Stations, wrote to Bob Lenz, warning him that if any other emergent teachers or artists were invited back to a Life Promotions event we would take the tough stance necessary again. In our opinion, this unfortunately rises to that level once again.

We want you to know we adhered to Matthew 18 when this came to our attention. We privately approached and spoke with Bob Lenz of Life Promotions, sharing our concerns. Bob reported he had several conversations with Michael Gungor but they have decided to bring him into Power of One nonetheless. We waited until we heard back from Bob before reaching our decision as a Board, after much prayer, thought and discussion.

We take no joy from this decision. In fact we are saddened by the actions we must take, but we are committed to the truth of God’s Word and cannot partner with any event that plants more doubt about God and His Word in the hearts and minds of our youth. Our youth are under attack for their beliefs in the Bible in schools, media and through the government, movies, television and social media. A Christian event should be a place safe from further confusion. But Michael Gungor performing at Power of One will only add more confusion.

There will be some who accuse this action of “dividing the Body of Christ”. We respectfully refer you to the Book of Jude to see what the Bible says about who the dividers are:

Jude 1:17-21

“But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.”

We pray for Bob Lenz and Life Promotions. And we pray for Michael Gungor, who is being deceived by the enemy to embrace human reasoning over the truth and wisdom of God. If Mr. Gungor repents of his ways we will be the first to rejoice. But false and dangerous teachings that contradict the very words of Jesus must be called out for what they are, and they have no place in a Christian music and teaching venue.
