As we continue our theme this week looking at the increasing threats against religious freedom, we can only imagine what lies ahead in 2016 for the Christian Church and our nation. This morning we wade into the murky waters of politics and the political process once again. For believers, is this a necessary battle and how should Christians be actively involved and not just give lip service to our faith?
In the New Testament, James writes, “You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone… For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.” (James 2:24-26)
Everyone who runs for public office claims they will be the one to make a difference and make things better and yet, with each passing year our nation incurs more in debt. As big government expands we have less freedom and a more godless society. Many politicians who campaigned to change things often become entrenched in the power of political parties and alliances. Some even face resistance from the establishment.
There are however, true Christians who understand they are serving the people they represent and go in with the right intentions and perspective, knowing they will often face red tape and opposition. Not all politicians have sold out to fame and power, and this morning we are joined by one who is standing boldly on the principles of God and His Word as he fights against abortion and stands for marriage as God defines it, Wisconsin State Representative Andre Jacque.
In our second segment, we discuss the firing of nearly 200 Muslim workers at a meat-packing plant because they demanded paid time to pray at work and were refused. We touch on the Wheaton College story and the hijab-wearing professor who naively claims Christians and Muslims worship the same God. Finally, we discuss Franklin Graham’s decision to leave the GOP due in part to the spending bill passed just before Christmas break in which Planned Parenthood will continue receiving federal funding despite all the evidence of corruption – harvesting and selling baby body parts as part of their abortion “services.”
Graham however, states he is “not leading an exodus out of the Republican Party.”
Summing up, Christians are to be culture changers as salt and light in a decaying, dark world. It is impossible to divorce our faith from our politics or turn off our religion as we enter work or the public square. We are to pray continually, share the gospel frequently, and our lives are to be an act of worship pointing others to a holy, righteous God.
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1-2
Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. Colossians 3:23
