The last twenty to thirty years have witnessed a remarkable, yet sad, transformation of Evangelical Christianity in America. The focus has shifted from a gospel meant to save the eternal souls of men to a “gospel” more concerned with saving the planet, racism, and gun control under the umbrella of “social justice.”
We expect men who have rejected the truth of God to pursue such silly goals. But when evangelical leaders and pastors abandon Scripture to promote political liberalism, it is a sign of just how far America and the Church have fallen.
Evangelical Christian theologian, pastor, and author, Francis A. Schaeffer wrote:
Any denomination or parachurch group that forsakes inerrancy will end up shipwrecked. It is impossible to prevent the surrender of other important doctrinal teachings of the Word of God when inerrancy is gone.
Another controversial conference is happening in Chicago next week drawing impressionable Christian youth further down the road to socialism. Jan Markell of Olive Tree Views joins us this morning to sound the alarm about the Justice Conference and the theological compromise of the National Association of Evangelicals.
Conferences masquerading as evangelical or even biblical have been around for decades, and this one is no exception. From the home page of their website:
The JUSTICE CONFERENCE will address major issues in the public square of 2016 America – including Race, Poverty, Violence, Refugees, Systemic Injustice, and Shalom.
Progressives such as Jim Wallis and Tony Campolo are also on the schedule. Promotion material for the conference quotes Nelson Mandela, a hardened Marxist, and some of the featured speakers are light years away from anything evangelical. This year, the radical leftist priest, Father Pfleger makes an appearance. (He was a part of Jeremiah Wright’s Marxist outreach in Chicago.) Other speakers have suggested that the “raw power of government” be unleashed. This is nothing but far Left politics being rammed down the throats of impressionable young people.
How will this minister to their souls? Does this sound like the true gospel to you? Sadly sponsored by World Relief which is a part of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), Jan Markell writes:
I have watched evangelicalism morph and decline for decades. I wasn’t around to see the Mainline Protestants make a sharp left turn one hundred years ago. They traded salvation issues for social issues. The results have been devastating…
As Mark Tooley of the Institute for Religion and Democracy writes,
“It was a long road for the Mainline Protestants. But that road began with theological compromises early in the 20th century or before, when the Bible and Christian tradition were reinterpreted into metaphors, and the redemption story for lost souls was replaced by social reform under the banner of the social gospel.”
Here are some issues the Christian Left has avoided or has not been concerned about over the years: cultural and social issues such as the persecution of Christians abroad, religious freedom, sanctity of unborn life, sexual ethics, God-ordained marriage, support of Israel, radical Islam, and communism.
They are however, all about environmental and political activism, reducing the threat of nuclear catastrophe, racism, gun control, neo-pacifism, Liberation Theology and denouncing American patriotism as bigoted idolatry.
For the Stream, Chelsen Vicari shared her concerns about the Justice Conference:
“This ostensibly evangelical conference seems to be a repackaged version of liberal Mainline Protestantism for hipsters. Over the years, organizers for the ‘Justice Conference’ have carefully avoided addressing relevant cultural and social issues such as the persecution of Christians abroad, religious freedom, sanctity of unborn life, sexual ethics or support of Israel. Instead, speakers cover topics including racism, gun control, neo-pacifism, Liberation Theology, police brutality, and denouncing American patriotism as bigoted idolatry.”
The NAE founders would be speechless to learn how their efforts have been compromised and twisted. Markell believes evangelicalism will go down in flames in the same manner the Mainline denominations have in the last one hundred years.
Here are a few verses to remember:
I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! Galatians 1:6-9
Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16
…who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 1 Peter 1:5-7
