Satan’s bag of tricks are not all that extensive.  He usually sticks to the same tactic because it works.  He placed doubt about God into Eve’s mind, and the result was sin and death entering the world.  These days the tactic remains the same:  Get people to doubt God and His Word, and convince them that we know better than God who we are and what is good.  But today Satan has a variety of institutions to reinforce the doubt he wants to spread including media, public education, Hollywood, and even sometimes naive professing Christians.

Pastor Randy White joins us to discuss the growing skepticism about God in society and within the church, and how we combat it with sound theology and method.

  • It seems that the world has gone mad, to the point that truth has been discarded for experience. Your thoughts?
    • In the “emergent” church, the focus is on a person’s experience with God, not with the actual content of Scripture.
    • In Common Core education, the focus is on the student’s journey with a problem, not the knowledge of facts and figures.
    • In the LGBT movement, the focus is on a person’s self-identification with gender, not any kind of scientific measure of gender.
  • Where does the rejection of absolute truth come from?
    • It is the heart of “post-modern” thought.
      • Classical thought: facts>logic>rhetoric
      • Modern thought: scientific method reveals truth
      • Postmodern thought: my experience is truth
    • This began with philosophers like Kierkegard.
      • A classic postmodern thought: people don’t care what you know until they know how much you care.
      • The primary value of postmodern thought: authenticity, transparency, (lack of foundation).
    • It was propagated in society with educators like Dewey.
      • Dewey insisted that classical education was bad for society because it caused society to be “stuck.”
      • He believed education should be used to produce social change.
    • How does this affect church life for the average Christian?
      • In theology, rather than “facts about God,” we now have “black liberation theology, feminist theology, urban theology, or my theology.
      • Sermons are no longer content driven, they are experience driven.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 1 Peter 3:15

“I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonders. I will be glad and exult in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High; But the LORD abides forever; He has established His throne for judgment, And He will judge the world in righteousness; He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity. The LORD also will be a stronghold for the oppressed, A stronghold in times of trouble; And those who know Your name will put their trust in You, For You, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.” Psalms‬ ‭9:1-2, 7-10‬
